Exam style Music Video Question
Explain one way in which music videos use media language to differ from each other. refer to one example of contrasting media language in two music videos you have studied to support your answer.
Music videos use media language such as the use of camera angles, colours and characters to create different effect's to fit the meaning of the song and the musicians image that would relate to their target audience. Music videos use media language in a variety of ways to represent and attract target audience. In the case of my case studies skater boy and teenage dirtbag the target audience is similar as both aim at 13-24 year olds. However skater boy aims at a indie alternative skater audience but teenage dirtbag aims for a more mainstream audience. Sk8er boi and teenage dirtbag both have similarities and differences thought out their music videos. Sk8er boy has more of a rebellious theme, where as Teenage dirtbag has a more stereotype theme when using the average american love story.
An example of this would be the camera work. Sk8er boi uses a combination of camera techniques including rapid shot changes , high angle, long close up shots, this connotes the skate narrative as these are conventions you would see in most skater videos as well as indie audiences. However Teenage dirtbag also uses a combination of camera techniques including shots that you would normally expect t o see in a teen romantic comedy's, low angle close ups and a zoom this connotes a main stream teen audience who tends to like this styler. This shows that they both have a similar target audience.
Another example of media language would be the editing. Sk8er boi uses shot shots, jump cuts and parallel editing that makes the video seem very edgy, this connotes this is a very rebellious band that represents youth who don't want to be mainstream. Where as Teenage dirtbag uses parallel editing cuts between the band and school gym and narrative that is similar to a teen romance comedy, this connotes that this is a band that represents an average mainstream teen audience. Unlike Sk8er boi tit does not look jumpy, edgy or rebellious.

Music videos use media language such as the use of colour to create different effects to fit the meaning of the song and the musicians' image. uptown funk and if i were a boy use very different post-production techniques. If i were a boy has been de-saturated in the editing process to create a monochrome effect. this effect helps to reinforce serious narrative that is being explored. in contrast, uptown funk has a highly saturated look, where the colours have emphasised in post-production, to create a more vibrant look that fits with that up-beat, fun song.
