music video case study

Explain one way in which music videos uses media language to differ from each other. refer to one example of contrasting media language in two music videos you have studied to support your answers? Skater boy and Teenage dirtbag

Music videos use media language in a variety of ways to represent and attract target audience. In the case of my case studies skater boy and teenage dirtbag the target audience is similar as both aim at 13-24 year olds. however skater boy aims at a indie alternative skater audience but teenage dirtbag aims for a more mainstream audience.

An example of this would be the camera work. Skater boy uses rapid shot changes, low angle, high angle, zooms out long close up shots. this connotes the skate narrative as these are conventions you would see in most skater videos as well as indie audiences. however teenage dirt bag uses shots that you would normally expect to see in teen romantic comedy's, low angle close ups, medium shots and tracking shot eye-line matches and and zooms this connotes a main stream teen audience who tend to like this style. showing that they both have a similar target audiences.

Another example of media language would be the editing. skater boy uses shot shots, jump cuts and parallel editing makes the video seem very edgy, this connotes this is a rebellious band that represent youth who don't want to be mainstream. where as teenage dirtbag uses parallel editing cuts between band and school gym  and narrative that is similar to a teen romance comedy. connotes that this is a band that represents an average mainstream teens. unlike skater boy there is does not look jumpy, edgy or rebellious.
