Convergence
Media convergence is a term that can refer to the merging of previously distinct media technologies and media forms due to digitisation and computer networking.

Convergence allows for interactive participation.
The audience is given a choice of how they consume media.

BBC : The live lounge can be accessed via the commercial platform of Vevo.

  • what are the advantage is there for (1) the BBC (2) Vevo or (3) the audience?
The advantages for the BBC is that the BBC's radio station can be accessed in more places than one.
This allows more people to be able to listen the way they prefer, so increases sales of the live lounge making the BBC's radio 1 more money. As well as Vevo is more popular therefor more advertisement and a wider audience of people who uses vevo. Therefor expanding radio 1's platform overall making them more popular.

Learning Objectives
To explore how the BBC is regulated

Ofcom exists to ensure the broadcasting code is being upheld and that listeners are protected from harmful or offensive material, unfair treatment and loss of privacy.
Ofcom's role

  • Ensuring the optimal use of the electro-magnetic spectrum
  • Ensuring that a wide range of electronic communications services - including high speed data services - is available throughout the united kingdom
  • Ensuring a wide range of TV and radio services of high quality and wide appeal
  • Maintaining plurality in the provision of broadcasting
  • Applying adequate protection for audiences against against offensive or harmful material
  • Applying adequate protection for audiences against unfairness or the infringement of privacy
Plurality - a) ensuring there is a diversity of viewpoints available and consumed across and within media enterprises and b) preventing any one media owner or voice having too much influence over public opinions and the political agenda.

Protection of under 18s -

  • Material that might seriously impair the physical, metal or moral development of people under eighteen must not be broadcasting.
  • In the provision of services, broadcasters must take all responsible steps to protect people under eighteen.
  • Children must also be protected in the form of appropriate scheduling ensuring that they are not privy to material that is unsuitable for them.
Definition of children : in this context children is taken to mean under the age of 15
